Oliver Thum

Biography

Oliver Thum studied chemistry at the University of Bonn, including research at SUNY at Stony Brook, NY, USA (Prof. G. D. Prestwich) and Max-Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Jena, Germany (Prof. W. Boland). He obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2002 in Bonn (Prof. M. Famulok).

After starting his industrial career at a Biotech Start-Up company in Berlin, he joined German chemical industry company Evonik in 2003. He hold several R&D positions in the field of biocatalysis and bioprocess development, focusing on the applications of biocatalytic methods for the production of specialty chemicals. Commercialized examples include Biosurfactants, such as Rhamnolipids (“Rheance One”, “REWOFERM RL”) and Sophorolipids (“REWOFERM SL”, “BREAK-THRU SF 420”) as well as enzymatically produced esters for the cosmetic industry (e. g. “TEGOSOFT AC”). He filed ~40 patents and patent applications.

Currently he holds a position as Vice President of Global Applied Technology & Technical Service for Evoniks Business Line “Interface & Performance” in Essen, Germany.
