Teaching and research

Barend Thijsse (1950) is emeritus Antoni van Leeuwenhoek professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Delft University of Technology.  
    In 2013-2016, at the end of an active  teaching career, he taught Materials Science and Engineering at the Bachelor's level, and Materials Simulation and Solid State & Device Physics at the Master's level.  
    Until 2016 he led the research group Virtual Materials and Mechanics. Together with PhD students and postdocs his  research interests focus on computational materials science and include electronic, atomic-scale, and dislocation-scale modeling studies of solid-state transformations, defect dynamics, contact mechanics, ion-beam tailoring of nanodevices, adhesion, plasticity, surface effects in fusion reactors, and the development of improved modeling methods. Recent research activities are global climate analysis and sub-mm resolved X-ray Fluorescence spectral studies of paintings by Old Masters.  
    Barend Thijsse has a BS and MS in physics and a PhD (1978) in experimental molecular  physics from the University of Leiden. Prior research subjects include molecular collisions (Leiden), gas-liquid critical phenomena (NiST, Washington, DC), amorphous metals (Delft, Los Alamos, NM), multilayers, quasicrystals, ion-beam assisted deposition of thin films (Delft) and multiphase steel modeling (Deakin University, Australia).
