Biography

Gabriele Meoni, Ph.D., Ing., received his Master's degree cum Laude in Electronic Engineering and his Ph.D. in Information Engineering from University of Pisa respectively in 2016 and 2020. During his Ph.D. he developed skills in Embedded systems, Digital Signal Processing, Artificial intelligence and edge computing with applications to Assistive Technology and space applications. From October 2018 and February 2019 he was visiting Researcher at the European Space Agency (ESA)  ESTEC, where he conducted research on the use of Artificial Intelligence onboard spacecraft. In particular, he participated in the Φ-Sat-1 mission, which experimented the first Deep Neural Network to be accelerated by Commercial Off-The-Shelf processor to be flown onboard an Earth Observation (EO) satellite.  After his Ph.D., he was as ESA Research Fellow, first in the Advanced Concepts Team (Sep. 2020/ Aug. 2021), then in the  Φ-lab (Aug. 2021/April 2023), where he conducted research in onboard processing, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Cloud Computing in Space and Neuromorphic Computing for Space. From 2021 to April 2023, he was campaign manager of the ESA Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP) campaign in Cognitive Computing in Space.  From October 2022 to March 2023, he was seconded to AI Sweden to conduct research on distributed edge learning onboard EO satellites.
