DIY Video Box at TU Library: what’s so amazing about it and how you can use it?

In March 2023 the TU Delft library launched a DIY video recording studio. It’s built for anyone on campus who is willing to create high-quality videos for their projects or presentations.

The main advantage of the Video Box is that it allows non-professional users to create professional-level content quickly and easily. All TU Delft students, lecturers, researchers and staff can use it for free!

While video is not a new tool at all, the DIY Box for creating professional-grade videos fast and easy without any crew, self editing, post production and rendering is super exciting. The process that used to take hours can now be completed without any hassle in just fifteen minutes.

The Video Box (which is a lot bigger than a box!) is a soundproof studio that can fit 2 people at the same time, so you can record group videos like an interview for example. It is not the first DIY Video Box at the University: there is one at the Teaching Lab, but it has always been available for teachers only. This year the NewMedia Centre has decided to open up this opportunity for everyone, so students and researchers can make their educational and promotional videos as well.

Educational video content made by a teacher is a great way to add value to the student experience: they can access content remotely, or go through the information they didn’t catch in the first place. Same goes for students who can now create impressive video presentations of their project or research.

How can you use the Video Box?

It is up to you what you want to record: it may be a presentation or a webinar, a tutorial or research introduction or even an interview. Though it’s called a DIY Box, there is no need to go through all the challenges of making the video on your own: getting the tripod, setting the right light, finding a good background and using editing software. Everything is already set for a professional ready to use video. All you need is to book a time slot and to come to the Library with a USB stick and your PPT presentation. You will be met at the reception by the Library host and guided through the setting up process which really consists of several clicks.

You get to choose whether you want to be on the left/right or in front of your presentation and push the start button. All the rest is done automatically.

A special software will tell you when it’s time to start with the countdown on. The titles and the transitions will be added automatically. The software will guide you through the setup based on your powerpoint: the notes from your PowerPoint will serve as your script in the autocue screen, so you can read the text at your own pace.

The Library guide will always be around to help, but once you make your first video, you won’t need any guidance!

If you’d like to try it out and produce your first professional video, feel free to book a slot.
