Engineering Education Conferences

for sharing your teaching experiences and learning about international developments

Remon Rooij en Renate Klaassen

Would you like to share and get feedback on your engineering education practice, education innovation, and/or pedagogical research project? Would you like to discuss the future of engineering education? Would you like to hear what is hot and happening in engineering education in other parts of the world? Then visiting an engineering education conference might be something for you. TU Delft is closely connected to two interesting and relevant international engineering education networks: CDIO (global) and SEFI (Europe). Both networks are open to welcoming TU Delft engineering educators. The 4TU Centre for Engineering Education has budget to support TU Delft staff members to go to these conferences. Here you can read more about both networks and how to enter the conference.

CDIO

The CDIO Annual International Conference is CDIO’s largest meeting of the year and includes the presentation of papers and posters, roundtables, workshops, and several other social activities. The 19th CDIO International Conference will be held in Trondheim (Norway) 26-29 June 2023. The main theme of the conference is “Engineering education for a smart, safe and sustainable future”. The deadline for abstract submission is 15 November 2022. Click here for more info about the call for paper abstracts and workshop/roundtable outlines.

The CDIO™ INITIATIVE is an innovative educational framework for producing the next generation of engineers. The framework stresses the importance of engineering fundamentals in the context of Conceiving — Designing — Implementing — Operating (CDIO) real-world systems and products. CDIO collaborators recognize that all engineering educators can learn a lot from practices elsewhere. The CDIO network, therefore, welcomes members in a diverse range of institutions ranging from research-led internationally acclaimed universities to local colleges dedicated to providing students with their initial grounding in engineering. The CDIO Initiative consists of more than 120 schools around the world.

“The CDIO working groups, roundtables, and workshops play a major role in the conference set up where many people, both juniors and seniors, actively contribute. It is great to see that what we value as important in our engineering education – a safe and inclusive environment that activates, stimulates, and motivates learners to contribute – also is the way of working in an academic conference on engineering education.”

Assoc.Prof. MaartenJan Hoekstra, director of education Bouwkunde (CDIO conference visitor in 2022)

SEFI

The SEFI Annual Conference is a scientific conference focused on Engineering Education and the largest event of this type in Europe. It is a unique opportunity for professors, students, industry, and professional organisations to exchange their views and meet their peers, and create a European network of contacts. The next SEFI Conference will be held in Dublin (Ireland) September 2023. Click here for more info.

SEFI is the largest network of engineering education players in Europe active since 1973. SEFI’s members are institutions of higher engineering education, rectors, deans, professors, and students, but also companies and other international associations involved in the field. The mission of SEFI is to contribute to the development and the improvement of engineering education in Europe, to emphasise the need for and to strengthen the image of both engineering education and engineering education professionals in society.

Want to know more about SEFI? Get in touch with TU Delft’s frequent SEFI conference visitor and 4TU.CEE program coordinator Renate Klaassen, or our official 4TU SEFI Board member Sonia Gomez Puentes from TU/e.

“It was very nice to attend SEFI as it was an interesting experience which gave us a good overview of what is happening in the field of Engineering education. People came to us sharing their experiences and telling us that we gave a very good and needed presentation on reflection in engineering education. It reinforces the work of our reflective engineer team.”
