Designing smart buildings requires a multidisciplinary approach and some issues are easily forgotten. Lack of flexibility of the mechanical systems often hinders the advanced control of buildings. In this lecture, we will take a closer look at some typical problems and possible solutions. And don't forget the data quality! In the built environment, we come from the 'middle ages' with gas and electricity meters that are manually read once a year. And now we are rapidly moving to the Internet of Things. Installing lots of sensors is very common, but checking the quality of the data is not. Using machine learning is a possible way out, but we will also discover the benefit of changing business models and defining the right business case. Using real-life examples, we will discover how.

Kees Wisse is working at DWA, a company based in the Netherlands that provides consultancy and engineering services within the framework of its mission: ‘Making sustainability work’. He holds an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Delft University of Technology and a PhD (cum laude) from the Faculty of Applied Earth Sciences of Delft University of Technology.

He has been involved in HVAC design and energy performance analysis of buildings for more than twenty years. His HVAC research has been published in 'Energy and Buildings'. His current interests include performance-based design and data-driven approaches. He recently contributed to the MOOC certificate program “Intelligent & Integrated Energy Systems”.
