UNESCO OER Award for DigiTelPro – supporting blended learning and student readiness

The prize recognizes three TU Delft colleagues for their leadership in advancing the UNESCO OER Recommendation in their own practices and through their work in the DigiTel Pro project that gives lecturers additional instruments for hybrid, blended and online teaching.

Martijn Ouwehand, Naomi Wahls and Wiebe Dijkstra from the ESA Teaching and Learning Services and Extension School teams received the award in occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Open Education Awards for Excellence. They were honoured not only for designing and delivering the online DigiTel Pro course Blending Your Education but also for their EADTU report “Blending Your Education: Lessons Learned During COVID” based on the course development and the EMBED implementation guidelines and Maturity Model, including a hands-on Course Design Template. The latter is a practical storyboard tool that lecturers can use to (re)design their blended course based on the learning objectives, learning activities, choice of media and assessment method.

Sharing learnings from participants

With over 240 enrolled participants, the Blending Your Education course is currently open for registration.

This course is designed as a self-paced MOOC with seven synchronous sessions (optional), where learners gain peer feedback.

Two interesting findings emerging from a pre-course survey showed that the majority of participants currently taught in remote teaching formats rather than traditional models and that they clearly saw an increased need for social elements in their course. More detailed learnings from pre- and post-course surveys with participants will be shared in a special report toward the end of the year.

Blended learning and student readiness

Blended learning is a hot topic in the world of higher education. Many institutions are implementing or experimenting with blended learning. But how can you, as a lecturer, take this to the next level? How can you make sure that you keep improving your course or blended education in your institution? To get some answer to this questions, access the recent webinar featuring Coordinator Blended Learning Developers Wiebe Dijkstra - Encouraging Blended Learning - Ideas from EMBED

DigiTel Pro strongly focuses on student readiness and supports teachers in addressing this most important aspect. Learning how to learn online is now a crucial life skill and cannot be left to chance and an upcoming webinar by Mark Brown from Dublin City University will address this topic. It will explain how we can learn a lot on how to design our courses for better engagement by understating what it really means to be a BOLD* learner and by taking more time and by creating opportunities to listen to the ‘voice’ of learners.
