Mark van Koningsveld

Profile

Mark van Koningsveld holds an MSc (1998) and a PhD degree (2003) in civil engineering from the University of Twente. After his PhD work, which was carried out at WL|Delft Hydraulics, later Deltares, he continued to work there until 2008.

In 2008 he switched jobs to work for Van Oord. There Van Koningsveld has been active mainly in the fields of environmental engineering and data science, both with a strong focus on innovation. Since 2018 Van Koningsveld has been appointed as Professor Ports and Waterways at the Hydraulic Engineering department of CEG. The field of Ports & Waterways is an important part of TU Delft's rich hydraulic engineering history and includes the design of canals, bridges, locks, breakwaters, quay walls and port sites. Partly because of the importance of hydraulic engineering knowledge for major port expansions such as the Tweede Maasvlakte, the Port of Rotterdam and SmartPort decided to actively support port research at TU Delft from 2011. In January 2022 a renewed 5-year agreement was signed between TU Delft, Port of Rotterdam and SmartPort to continue this relationship. The Ports and Waterways section is actively involved in projects that lie close to the research and innovation roadmaps of Port of Rotterdam and SmartPort. Van Koningsveld is steering group member of SmartPorts Future Proof Port Infrastructure roadmap.”

  • On behalf of Van Oord, he has been involved in the EcoShape foundation that runs the Building with Nature innovation programme, between 2008 and 2015. First as program manager, since 2013 up to 2018 as Management Team member.
  • As lead engineer of environmental engineering he was responsible for Van Oord’s Guards Programme: PlumeGuard, FaunaGuard and ReefGuard, for which his team received Van Oord’s Marine Ingenuity Award (2014).  
  • In the field of data science he was awarded the Dutch Data Prize (2012), awarded two-yearly by 3TU.Datacentrum en DANS, for his contributions to the OpenEarth workflow. Van Oord’s data lab emerged from that initiative.
  • Over the years Van Koningsveld has been active in Topsector Water & Maritiem (TSWM) in various roles. Since January 1st 2020, he has been appointed as member of the TSWM Topteam representing academia. The TSWM initiative on data science: DigiShape, was initiated by him.
  • Next to his current role as Professor Ports and Waterways he still holds the position of R&D and Innovation Manager and is a member of Van Oord’s Ingenuity Hub that tasked to structure the companies research and development activities. Herein his main focus lies on sustainability innovations and on increasing the grip on waterborne supply chains in marine construction projects.
  • Van Koningsveld is member of the PIANC Netherlands board. And chairs Task Group 234 on ‘Infrastructure for the decarbonisation of IWT’.

Research

Van Koningsveld’s research interest focuses on the application of science for decision making. Groundwork for this interest was laid by his PhD work at the University of Twente, which was titled 'Matching Specialist Knowledge with End User Needs'.

His work at Van Oord is very much focussed on this same interface, with special attention for roadmaps for marine infrastructure development, offshore and offshore wind, engineering and estimating tools and equipment development.

His research on Ports and Waterways also aligns with this focus: aiming for effective, efficient, sustainable and safe solutions on the interface between nautical traffic, waterborne transport processes and the state of the water infrastructure. The inherent complexity requires that ports and waterways are viewed as parts of a coherent system that supports waterborne supply chains, and that their integral design and operation is essential.

To reflect this coherence the group recently published new lecture notes in TU Delft’s open textbook series:
