Check out the new Handbook of Engineering Systems Design!

News - 25 September 2022 - Webredactie

Last week a new Handbook appeared collecting the body of knowledge of designing sociotechnical systems. The publication unlocks this knowledge for other research fields and policymakers. The Handbook has been edited by TPM researcher Pieter Vermaas with Anja Maier (DTU, Denmark & Strathclyde, UK) and Joseph Oehmen (DTU, Denmark).

More than 60 leading scholars from the Engineering Systems Design community share their insights on multi-level systems change for humane and sustainable futures in the Handbook. In 35 chapters and a total of 1000+ pages the publication surveys the lay of the land and brings together challenges, positions, theories, methods, case examples, conjectures, and actionable insights forward across design, management, and policy.

Colleagues and former colleagues from TPM who have contributed are Pieter Bots, Jan Kwakkel, Paulien Herder and Sebastiaan Meijer.

Set-up Handbook

Part 1 The basics of the socio-technical engineering systems perspective
Part 2 Describing core characteristics of large-scale engineering systems
Part 3 Designing engineering systems interventions
Part 4 Reflecting on engineering systems interventions
Part 5 A look to the future with case examples and calls to action

The handbook appeared in the Springer Reference work series.
