Duty of Care at TU Delft Elective

News - 15 November 2023 - Teaching Support

Student welfare – where do you as an educator come in? An elective addressing our student ‘Duty of Care’ and the role of the educator.

First off, TU Delft defines ‘Duty of Care’ as “organising education and the educational environment in such a way that it supports student welfare. We are responsible for creating an open, safe, and inclusive environment that enables students to flourish in their academic and personal development, as well as responsible for providing guidance to students who need it to successfully start, follow, and complete their study.”

What to expect from this elective?

The first session will aim to address the role of the lecturer concerning student welfare. Some questions we will reflect on: What is/should be your responsibility? What about TU Delft’s Duty of Care and our own morals in terms of Duty of Care – where do we draw the line? How can we assist lecturers when it comes to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for our students? Does supporting our students mean that concerns for our own well-being and work-life balance come into play?

Between both sessions, you are expected to reflect on these questions and come up with a concrete plan of action as to how you might address this topic in your own course/programme/faculty (as you see fit). You would need approx. 2 hours for this prep work. During session two, you will present your ideas to your peers.
