After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Leiden, I discovered that while I do love pure mathematics, I wanted to escape the world of abstract theory crafting, and explore its real-world possibilities. I found what I was searching for with Geomatics in the Built Environment.

I have learnt a lot during this two-year programme. Not only does it take you on a deep dive into a wide range of subjects, but also demands a constant hands-on approach, working either alone or as a group to become a true expert. The tasks often feel daunting but are always rewarding. After a first year of exploring all there is to learn in Geomatics, we spent our second year working on various exciting and advanced projects to show what we had learnt, such as the synthesis project, internship, and thesis.

Geomatics in the Built Environment is a small programme with fewer than 50 students and a small, yet ever-present group of teaching staff, creating an amazing atmosphere to study in. We have our own study hall, which is a place where you can work and focus to make stressful deadlines, but also doubles as a space where you can relax and unwind.

Geomatics in the Built Environment expects from its students. A solid background in maths and programming is definitely a plus. While there are introductory courses on Python fundamentals, it wouldn’t hurt to be prepared for much of the programming and linear algebra you will be doing throughout the course.

I’m not sure what path I’ll take after graduating, but I hope to continue exploring what I have worked on during my thesis, combining Photogrammetry and Machine Learning.
