Winter walks

In winter the Hortus Botanicus seems rather bare and cold, but some spots still create excellent conditions for plants that flower in winter. Many of these plants originate from cold (mountain) areas where they bloom in spring. In the Netherlands winters are less cold which makes these plants think it is spring and thus flower very early. You could say they suffer from a kind of plant jet lag! Winter flowers can be very striking, others are very modest but have very strong scents that fill the air with their perfume. If you follow one of our three walks you will see and smell them automatically.
Walk 1: Winter bloomers – on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 to 23 January 2023
Walk 2: Hamamelis (Witch Hazel) - on Saturdays and Sundays January 8 to February 12, 2023
Walk 3: Gymnosperms - on Saturdays and Sundays from February 18 to March 5, 2023
You can get a map at the entrance and walk around at your leisure. On Sundays, weather permitting, we also have free guided tours at 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
