"Sensing opportunities: using citizen science and opportunistic sensing to answer urban climate questions"
By Arjan Droste

Dr. Arjan Droste works as Assistant Professor in the department of Water Management at the faculty of Civil Engineering at TU Delft.
He is Academic Career Tracker of the Flagship: Cooling Cities - the urban climate of tomorrow within the theme Climate Change Adaption.

How and where to get data for urban climate research?
His research focuses on understanding the urban climate, and the flows of wind, water and energy in the complex urban terrain. In particular he is interested in innovative techniques to obtain urban climate data: for instance the use of mobile phone data to calculate estimates of urban heat, or the potential of small weather stations that citizens have in their gardens to gain valuable knowledge of the urban climate at the smallest scales.

"Bringing our high-resolution urban microclimate models to the exascale ?"
By Pedro Simões Costa

Dr. Pedro Simões Costa works as Assistant Professor in the Process & Energy department at the faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering.
He is Academic Career Tracker of the Flagship: Urban Flow Climate within the theme Climate Science.

Urban microclimates are among the most complex and least understood, and also where most of the planet population resides. While we know well the equations that describe its dynamics, these are extremely challenging to solve without making assumptions that will increase the uncertainty of our predictions. Fortunately, the paradigm is changing thanks to the ever-increasing computing power. In the lecture, Pedro will show how we can exploit exascale computing to unveil the secret life of air parcels flowing in a city.
