Hidden Hortus – Start citizen science project

Biodiversity is declining. As Hortus Botanicus we already play a major role in preserving biodiversity, but we would like to know how we can contribute even more. That is why in 2024 the Hortus will conduct extensive inventories of the biodiversity in our garden together with our visitors to better map out what grows, blooms and lives in our garden.

The project will kick off with an introduction by the director of TU Delft Hortus Botanicus, James Byng. Following that, a lecture will be given by Kees Mostert. He will discuss the biodiversity of wild animals and plants in the TU Delft Hortus Botanicus. Birds, mammals, amphibians, insects, as well as wild plants and mushrooms will be covered. The presentation will provide insights into recently discovered species in the Hortus and shed light on the ecological backgrounds, distribution, and the consequences of climate change. In light of this, there will also be discussions about the plan to make as many observations as possible in 2024, and a brief tour will be given through the Hortus.
