New Art-Embedded Specialisation in BSc Honours Program also available for PhD’s

In cooperation with colleague philosophers from TBM and professional artists, Eduardo Mendes formulated a new Specialisation in the Interfaculty BSc Honours Program named “Awareness & Culture”.

Carrier multiplication for more efficient solar energy conversion

Single-junction silicon solar cells can have a maximum of ~33% efficiency known as the Shockley-Queisser limit. How to overcome this efficiency barrier is an important research question that is addressed by postdoc Sourav Maiti from the Optoelectronic Materials Section.

Paulien Herder appointed Dean Faculty of Applied Sciences (AS)

The Executive Board has appointed Professor Paulien Herder as dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (AS) as of 1 March 2021. She is currently chair of the Chemical Engineering department at AS. Paulien Herder graduated in Chemical Engineering from TU Delft in 1994. In 1999 she received her PhD from the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) for her thesis 'Process Design in a Changing Environment'. After her PhD, she stayed on at TPM, where she continued her research into the design of large-scale complex systems. She was closely involved in the international research consortium Next Generation Infrastructures. From 2004 to 2007 she was also the director of education. In 2009, she was appointed Professor of Engineering Systems Design in Energy & Industry. Between 2013 and 2019 she was director of the Delft Energy Initiative and from 2014 to 2018 she was chair of the Engineering Systems and Services department. In 2019, she transferred to the Department of Process & Energy at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Engineering and Materials Science (3mE). There she became programme leader for e-Refinery, the interfaculty programme developing technology and systems for the production of raw materials and fuels from renewable energy. Since 2020, she has been chairing the Chemical Engineering department at AS. Herder represents the Dutch knowledge institutions in the top team of the Energy Top Sector and fulfils various administrative and supervisory roles in the energy domain. She is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Hotelschool The Hague and sat on the board of the NWO domain Applied and Engineering Sciences since 2019.

The prize is awarded for the development of various CO2 catalytic conversion technologies and the methodologies to study catalytic reactions while catalysts are functional.

Greener chemistry through new approach to catalysis

Researchers in Delft have developed at catalyst that is even effective in negligible amounts. The form and durability of the catalyst mean that it lasts much longer in reactions, saving a great deal of energy, waste and costs. The results were published in Nature Communications.

In Memoriam: Prof.dr.ir. Herman van Bekkum (1932 – 2020)

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing away of our esteemed professor emeritus Herman van Bekkum on 30 November 2020. Herman van Bekkum was Rector Magnificus of Delft University of technology from 1975 to 1976 and worked at TU Delft from 1955 to 1998. During this time, he worked for Shell for a brief period between 1959 and 1961, but he ultimately chose to make TU Delft his home, and a very successful choice that was. After his retirement in 1998 he remained active in our faculty for many years, both within Chemical Engineering and the catalysis community. He meant a lot to the university, especially to the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Herman van Bekkum was a versatile chemist with a near limitless zest for work. He made major contributions to science, especially in the field of catalytic applications of zeolites and ordered mesoporous materials and non-food applications of sugars. More importantly, his infectious enthusiasm conveyed his love of organic chemistry to colleagues and students alike, and enabled him to inspire great achievements in them. This quality was rewarded in 1996 when TU Delft named him a Professor of Excellence. Herman van Bekkum always sought co-operation with industry, and managed to secure extensive funding that he could put towards satisfying his enormous creativity and curiosity. He performed various managerial positions within and beyond TU Delft. Within TU Delft he served as Rector Magnificus in the 1975-1976 academic year, and beyond the confines of the university his positions included that of president of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (KNCV). From 1995, he was a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), an important academic distinction. In 1980, he was appointed an honorary member of the Technologisch Gezelschap (TG) study association. Enthusiasm, enormous commitment, efficiency in an environment that sometimes verged on the chaotic, and great mental speed and agility characterised his unique personality. Staff members at the faculty of Applied Sciences often had their work cut out keeping up with him in the corridors. And he never failed to track down the exact documents he needed in his crammed study. Herman van Bekkum will be in our memory always, a memory that will be cherished by all at the faculty who had the pleasure of meeting him or working with him.
