In his inaugural lecture on January 19, TU Delft professor of Thermal and Fluids Engineering, Rene Pecnik, states that providing more fundamental insight into thermal fluid science is needed to design highly efficient and reliable equipment that contribute to the energy transition.

New TU Delft policy and guidelines of Open Access publishing are effective by February 1, 2024. The current policy that dates from 2016 no longer reflects the current practice as much has changed in the open access landscape. The new policy and guidelines bring together all of TU Delft’s Open Access components.

Scientists from TU Delft have found how confined microalgal cells grow optimally in photosynthetic engineered living materials. With the use of light energy, the microalgae convert CO2 from the air into sugars, energy and oxygen for their survival. Such algae-based living materials could be used in a range of applications, from functional objects for CO2 capture, to oxygen sources for biological tissues. The team, led by Marie-Eve Aubin-Tam and Kunal Masania, present their new insights in Advanced Materials.

At the global aviation conference AIAA SciTech Forum, Aerospace startup Elysian, in collaboration with Delft University of Technology, today announced new research findings that demonstrate viability for battery-electric air travel on a larger scale than previously thought possible.

Extreme rainfall events are becoming more extreme and periods of drought are becoming more frequent. To keep the Dutch delta liveable, adaptations will be needed, such as extra water buffers. The Netherlands has a long history of struggle against water, but also makes eager use of it. What can we learn from our heritage? Erik Mostert, lecturer and researcher Water Management at TU Delft, developed several strategies for the province of South Holland to be more resilient to climate change. Inspiration for this came from Dutch heritage: tow barge canals.

A team of researchers from TU Delft has succeeded in long-term mapping of beach topography to within a few centimetres. The unique dataset provides insights into coastal changes for every hour, for three years. This data is important for dune maintenance and to keep the hinterland well protected. The methodology is also being used to monitor other coastlines and even glaciers. The data are open source and published in Nature, and the new methodology was also recently published.

The Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Science (3mE) is starting the new year with a new name: Mechanical Engineering (ME). The name change took effect from 1 January.

On the recommendation of the Supervisory Board, the General Meeting of Shareholders of Delft Enterprises B.V. appointed Ronald Gelderblom as new director as of January 1, 2024. Gelderblom already works at Delft Enterprises as Investment Director. He succeeds Paul Althuis, who has been in charge of Delft Enterprises since 2008. Delft Enterprises is the holding company with which TU Delft participates and invests in spin-offs.
