Biography

I completed my bachelors in Environmental and Biosystems Engineering from the University of Nairobi in Kenya. I later joined Wetsus Academy and obtained a master’s degree in Water Technology in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. This was a joint degree offered by a collaboration of 3 universities; Wageningen University Research, Groningen University and Twente University.  My previous projects involved investigating nutrients and resources recovery from waste water in view of a circular economy, at Wetsus research institute and Nijhuis Saur Industries.

Research activities

Nitrogen pollution presents environmental challenges as it causes eutrophication on water bodies,  threatening aquatic life. To prevent these effects, nitrogen concentration in surface waters need to be reduced through the removal of nitrogen during wastewater treatment process. In addition, the nitrogen removed can be recovered for industrial and agricultural use. The focal point of my research is the optimization of a membrane based process,  for the recovery of nitrogen from different wastewater streams with efficient energy use.
