Profile

Expertise

The main research interests are related to aerial manipulation. This encompasses the design and control of flying robots that can physically interact and exchange forces with their environment to maximise workspace.

The main application areas for this are those where human intervention is costly and dangerous, and include environments such as space, offshore, or submarine.

Biography

Martijn completed both his BSc. and MSc. at Delft University of Technology, a place that is still his home base. His BSc. thesis concerned the conceptual design of a permanent Lunar habitat, a concept that already leaned heavily on utilising robotics to deal with the harsh environment.
During the master's programme, he interned at Parrot Drones, where he worked on state-of-the-art industrial obstacle avoidance and guidance. Finally the MSc. thesis was on the topic of aerial manipulation, designing a compliant manipulation system for force exertion with the application of sensor placement. This project laid a strong foundation for the research currently conducted as part of the PhD.

Martijn started his PhD at the Biomorphic Intelligence Lab in January 2024 under supervision of Dr. Salua Hamaza on the topic of aerial manipulation.
