Biography

Peter Wieringa obtained MSc in Mechanical Engineering and Doctoral degree (1985) from TU Delft, with honours. He was a researcher at TU Delft (1980-1884) and the Dept. of Physiology, University of Leiden (1984-1987). From 1987 to 1991 he was a fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (TU Delft and University of Amsterdam Academic Medical Centre (AMC)) and in 1988 he received an International Fogarty Fellowship (NIH/USA). From 1988-1990 he was trained in experimental physiology (micro-circulation of the blood) as visiting assistant professor at the University of Virginia, VA, USA. He continued this research at TU Delft and the AMC until 1991.

In 1992 he became associate professor at TU Delft in Man-Machine Systems (topics human supervisory behaviour and human reliability associated with the control of complex technical systems, including medical systems). From 1996 until 2010 he was part time visiting professor at the Université de Valenciennes et du Hainaut-Cambresis, France. From 2000 he is full professor and was head of the Department of Medical Technology (TU Delft) until 2005. In 2004 he was visiting professor at the Bio-Medical Department, Wuhan University, China, for a short period.

From 2006 until 2011 he was Director of Studies and Vice Dean of the faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE). He introduced the Honours Programme Delft, which served as a model for the TU Delft Honours Programme. He assisted at several education audit committees e.g. for Biomedical Engineering in the Netherlands, for Science and Technology at NTNU in Norway, and ETH Zurich.

In 2011 he became Vice-Rector (since 2018 Pro Vice Rector) of TU Delft and academic dean of the Honours Programme. In addition in 2012 he was appointed Dean of the TU Delft Graduate School. His portfolio also includes international education partnerships and he represents TU Delft at IDEA league. Since 2018 he is member of the EUA-IEP pool of assessors.
