SUM: Symbiotic Urban Movement

SUM is a project developed by architecture students, that can transform 847.000 underperforming post-war tenement flats into net-positive and future-proof houses for all. With the fund, they will spread their concept among industry partners and perform viability studies for the redevelopment of several post-war neighborhoods in the Netherlands.

SUM, the Symbiotic Urban Movement, was a student team from the Delft University of Technology and took part in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2022 with other universities from across the world. Over the past year, SUM continued as a team of four transition experts and as SUM+ to implement their three years of research into the market.

"Our new name, SUM+, stands for everything we add to the existing project. Truly creating the future by harnessing the past! For the past four years, we have been revolutionizing the housing industry by creating an affordable and energy-neutral renovation and densification strategy for post-war tenement flats across Europe, and our goal is to continue to do so!"
