What to do with signs from students who might be dealing with a personal issue?

As teaching staff you may notice signs from students that they might be dealing with a personal issue.

This document (English version) (Dutch version) is to support you in identifying (possible) personal issues and to address this adequately.

Autumn is here, beautiful leaves on the trees, but it is getting colder, there is less daylight.

This can be the time of year some students  start to feel a bit down. Lower on energy, less motivation. Difficulty to get out of bed, hard to get up in the dark and go to lectures. Some might feel homesick or start to doubt their choice of study.

You, as a teacher might notice some students not attending your class anymore. Or you notice insufficient grades. Maybe you even receive messages from students telling you they struggle.

Let students know you care about them. Be open to them and let them know that it is important to share personal issues. Tell them that, should issues arise, you can always help them figure out where to get appropriate support.
