The 16 existing TU Delft AI Labs will be expanded with another 8 labs! Within these labs, experts in advanced AI technologies and domain experts will work together to accelerate scientific progress and find solutions to societal challenges. The labs will also be committed to education in the field of AI, data and digitalisation. The recruitment of 32 PhDs will start mid-December, the labs start in March.

AiBLE Lab - Activating Intelligence in Building Lasting and Liveable Environments
The AiBLE Lab examines how AI can be embedded within complex multi actor real world settings to drive better decision making and close the policy practice gap. Particularly in addressing societal challenges and sustainability transitions.

AI DeMoS Lab - AI as Deliberative Multimodal Systems
The DeMoS Lab intends to contribute to the development of multimodal AI systems that foster deliberation and engagement of citizens and enable them to take informed decisions under conditions of uncertainty.

AI Futures Lab
The AI Futures Lab will explore and prototype new ways in which persons and organisations can deploy AI. The aim is to expand scientific knowledge and public understanding of AI capabilities.

BIOLab - Biomedical Intervention Optimisation Lab
The ambition of the BIOLab is to develop computation architectures and learning methods based on knowledge about biological systems. And create computer vision models which can process and extract features from imaging data.

BioMorphic Intelligence Lab
The BioMorphic Intelligence Lab aims to tackle questions about robustness and efficiency of drones by using biologically inspired solutions for the 'body' and the 'brain' of the drones. The lab will use state of the art techniques from embodied intelligence and neuromorphic AI research.

SELF Lab - Smart Edge Lab for Healthcare
The aim of the SELF Lab is developing, designing, and prototyping ultra-low power smart computing engines for edge applications (like early detection of epilepsy) using biological principles, architectures, device technologies and algorithms.

Sensor AI Lab
The Sensor AI Lab unites sensor fusion and AI, focusing on physical knowledge about AI to extract information from available sensor data.

XAIT Lab - eXplainable AI Twins for Resilient Cities
The XAIT Lab aims to strengthen digital twinning methodologies with explainable AI techniques, to create a new class of AI twins for cities. The approach is envisioned to provide decision support for tackling urban problems.

About the TU Delft AI Labs

Each TU Delft AI Lab consists of a team of talented scientists, 4 PhD students and 2 lab directors, who together contribute to education and research in AI. The PhD students receive a contract of 5 years, 1 year is used to provide additional education. By March 2022, around 150 academics from the eight faculties of TU Delft will be active within the 24 TU Delft AI Labs. More than 6 million euros per year has been made available by TU Delft for the labs. The TU Delft AI Labs programme provides ambitious academics with impulse funding for five years to jointly expand new, still developing areas of research into mature disciplines. After five years, this structural investment will be used to start the next series of 24 labs.
