TU Delft makes global top 10 of QS Engineering & Technology universities for the first time

TU Delft is ranked 10th for Engineering & Technology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject published on 6 April 2022. TU Delft also made the top 20 in ten of its categories.

For many years now, TU Delft has been ranked among or near the top 20 Engineering & Technology universities in the world in both the QS ranking and the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. This year’s high ranking is in part due to a better h-index score and a good score for a new indicator, the IRN (International Research Network), which measures the diversity of an institution’s research collaborations. TU Delft scored the maximum number of points for this indicator. The Engineering & Technology ranking is the most relevant for TU Delft because this category applies to the entire university. Moreover, this subject ranking compares universities with a similar focus, in contrast with the QS World University Ranking, which compares all universities.

Better position overall in QS subject rankings

TU Delft achieved top global positions in Civil & Structural Engineering (2), Architecture (2) and Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (5). The University also made the top 20 for Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mineral & Mining Engineering, Art & Design, and Environmental and Material Sciences. The cause of the higher rankings varied by specialisation, but the common denominator is the score for employer reputation, which has risen in many specialisations. Employer reputation is an indication of how well a university prepares its students for the labour market.

QS World University Rankings by Subject

In addition to the annual World University Ranking, QS issues separate Subject Rankings. This year, 1543 universities were ranked in 51 specialisations. The subjects are divided into five faculty areas (broader fields of specialisation). TU Delft was ranked 27 times in all five faculty areas and in 22 subjects. The ranking is based on five indicators, namely: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations, h-index and IRN.
