Funding NWO Open Technology Programme for John-Alan Pascoe

News - 02 July 2023

On June the 29th, the board of NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences announced that it is funding seven research projects through the Open Technology Programme. One of them is ‘ Damage Tolerance of Cold Spray Additive Repairs’ (CSAR) by John-Alan Pascoe. In total, NWO is funding these projects with 5.4 million euros, companies involved and other organisations are investing over 1.6 million euros in these projects.

Cold spray is a material deposition technology that is very promising for the repair of aerospace parts. However its application is currently limited because we don't have a methodology to predict a repaired part’s fatigue and impact performance. This research will address this by establishing the critical science and engineering knowledge on fatigue crack initiation and propagation in cold spray repaired parts, as well as investigating their response to impact loading. This will lead to the development of a methodology for assessing fatigue and damage tolerance of cold spray repaired parts, ultimately supporting its use as a structural repair technology.

The Open Technology Programme

The Open Technology Programme provides funding for excellent research, with a view to potential application of the results. The programme gives companies and other organisations a low-threshold way to join scientific research that should lead to applicable knowledge.
