During the New Year's breakfast 2024 of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Dr. Wim Bouwman (Radiation Science and Technology) was awarded the prestigious J.B. Westerdijk Prize. He received the prize for his exceptional contributions to education.

Wim Bouwman has a long track record at TU Delft, as a researcher and as a teacher. If you go to his private website and click on ‘education’, the first thing you read is “I am fond of teaching, it gives me a lot of inspiration. I learn a lot from all my students.” Study association VvTP told that during the evaluation of his first-year course, the students all considered it an interesting and well-constructed course. The VvTP wrote that “The feedback was so positive, that we had to ask the students explicitly if there were no points of improvement at all.”

Not satisfied with just teaching an excellent course, Wim Bouwman also wanted to share his material with the wider world, and therefore teamed up with two colleagues to make an open interactive textbook about their course, which was published in November 2023. The programme director also commented on this book in his recommendation: “It inspires me to see how he uses the book and the course, to implement the faculty’s vision of offering different ways to students to master the material.” Finally, Wim Bouwman is also very actively involved in the redesign of the physics BSc curriculum.
