Analysis of Free Piston Composite Cycle Engine Performance

In order to increase the core thermal efficiency of aircraft engines, constant volume combustion can be used. In the Free Piston Composite Cycle Engine (FP-CCE) concept, free pistons are connected to the aircraft engine to achieve an increase in thermal efficiency. This study compared the performance and emissions of the preliminary design of the FP-CCE compared to the state-of-the-art turbofan engines. As a result, it was seen that the FP-CCE concept can reach higher thermal efficiencies at the expense of higher NOx emissions.
