VALUES AND ATTACHMENT: Social and ecological spaces in value-based redesign of former milling factory, Estação, Faro

This project is the heritage expansion of an abandoned factory in the Estação neighbourhood in Faro, Portugal. It managed to develop a values-based model for redesigning built heritage with three research phases: cultural significance survey, values-based redesign, and heritage impact assessment.

The study of values and attributes serves as the bridge that supports the transition between research and design. Early in the project, the cultural significance survey identified the relevance of place attachment to social and ecological values on this site, leading to the design proposals: using the outdoor space with nature to support people’s interaction and leisure activity without harming the calm atmosphere of the neighbourhood and the elderly’s sense of ownership. Later in the project, the heritage impact assessment evaluates the design’s enhancement of the values of the heritage and discusses whether the initial target of improving place attachment has been achieved.
