Studying prehistoric production processes of birch bark tar using computational modelling reveals what kinds of cognition were required for the materials produced by Neanderthal and early modern humans.

TU Delft recognizes the importance of open education and encourages all TU Delft teaching staff to submit a proposal for open education projects for a funding up to EUR 20,000, with a project term of a maximum of 1 year. Proposals can be submitted till November 10.

We, together with Tim van der Hagen, had the honour of receiving outgoing minister Robbert Dijkgraaf of Education, Culture and Science. During his visit on September 7th, Dijkgraaf engaged in discussions with various TU Delft scientists about the principles of Open Science in practice.

In cases of upper airway obstruction, acute surgery to open the trachea just below the larynx is the only solution. Due to the rarity of this syndrome, doctors have very little experience with this life-saving procedure. Doctors at the Reinier de Graaf Hospital and students at TU Delft decided that this had to change. Together they developed a realistic and durable model of the larynx.

The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the ERC Starting Grants for young researchers. Five of them are scientists from TU Delft. This European grant of €1.5 million for a five-year research programme is intended to enable individual scientists to build their own teams and conduct groundbreaking research.

Converting large concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) into products for the chemical industry. That is what Tom Burdyny, recipient of an ERC Starting Grant, wants to achieve. The method that might make this possible is called electrolysis, which creates new chemical bonds by application of electricity.

Researchers from Delft established a way to address many quantum dots with only a few control lines using a chessboard-like method. This enabled the operation of the largest gate-defined quantum dot system ever. Their result is an important step in the development of scalable quantum systems for practical quantum technology. They publish their results in Nature Nanotechnology.

Delft University of Technology and its Kavli Institute of Nanoscience received a five-million-dollar grant from The Kavli Foundation to fund a collaborative effort to develop the quantum equivalent of telecommunication.

It is vital to the increase the reliability of the European electricity system. The electricity grid needs to be ready for a drastic increase of renewable energy and more resilient to future shocks (such as cyber-attacks). That is why 77 partners, from 15 European countries, have come together through the TwinEU consortium project to create a digital twin of the entire European electricity grid. TU Delft is one of the prominent partners within this project and is very excited to have won the grand proposal together with all the leading stakeholders.
