Personal circumstances justifying postponement of the Binding recommendation on continuation of studies (BSA) for current students

Personal circumstances justifying postponement of the Binding recommendation on continuation of studies (BSA) for current students

BSA Committee CEG

The Faculty of CEG has a BSA committee, consisting of lecturers, which processes the requests for postponement. The BSA committee will also hear the students during the hearings. It is the task of the BSA committee to investigate whether or not there is a plausible causality between the personal circumstances and the study progress. Therefore it is important to provide substantial evidence with your request, such as an independent statement of a doctor/psychologist.

To be able to decide whether a student would have obtained BSA if the personal circumstances would not have taken place, the BSA committee takes the obtained results within the assessment period into account. Certainly, the BSA committee checks the results obtained for the selective and indicative courses of the study programme. For Civil Engineering these courses are: Analyse, Lineaire Algebra, Dynamica en Modelvorming, Constructiemechanica 1 and Constructiemechanica 2.  And for Applied Earth Sciences: Mathematics 1, Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics, Mechanics en Electricity & Magnetism.

Application for postponement

On the TU Delft student portal you will find all the information concerning a request for postponement of the binding recommendation on continuation of studies. Applications for postponement of the BSA on the grounds of personal circumstances can be made until 14 June 2024. Also apply when the results of Quarter 4 are still unknown!

Always consult the Academic Counselor (Study Advisor). The Academic Counselor will be able to give further information about the procedure and the documents that are necessary. Keep in mind that the student doctor or psychologist have a waiting list. To apply for a statement of the student doctor, student psychologist or elite sports coordinator the deadline is 24 May 2024.

The BSA committee meets on the following data:

  • Thursday 2 May 2024 (deadline for submitting your request: 10 April 2024)
  • Tuesday 25 June 2024 (deadline for submitting your request: 14 June 2024)

Hearings (objection)

Students who expect to receive a negative advice on the binding recommendation on continuation of studies, have the opportunity to explain their personal circumstances in person during a hearing. It is important to provide as much substantial evidence about your circumstances as possible. Keep in mind that the deadline for a statement of the student doctor, student psychologist or elite sports coordinator is 6 August 2024.

You can submit your application for the hearing until 15 August 2024 23.59 hrs.

The hearings will take place on:

  • Tuesday 20 August 2024
  • Wednesday 21 August 2024
  • Thursday 22 August 2024

If you have registered before the deadline by means of the objection form, you will be invited for one of these dates. Due to the amount of applications, planning and deadlines, you will only receive an invitation for the hearing one day in advance: in the afternoon of Monday 19 August 2024.

Procedure during the hearing

The BSA committee will meet with a lot of students on this day. Therefore, you will receive an invitation for a specific time slot of 10 minutes. It is important to be on time. You do not have to report somewhere that you have arrived. Please wait in the hall near the meeting room, until the Academic Counselor will come to get you. In the meeting room, the entire BSA committee, the Academic Counselors and at least one executive secretary will be present. This amounts to approximately 10 people. The chair of the committee will first explain the goal of the hearing and then give you time to speak. Please be assured that the BSA committee has already read all the documents that you have provided in advance. It is therefore important to share new/recent information with the committee. The BSA committee will also take the opportunity to ask you some additional questions. You will receive the official decision after a week, before 1 September.
