Education

Education

Until at least the fourth quarter of this academic year, there will be no on-campus education at TU Delft; this includes exams. All education will be offered online as much as possible in the coming period. Further instructions will follow. Students: keep an eye on Brightspace.

Examinations

The university has decided that the examinations in Q3 will be offered online as much as possible. For students, this means the following:

  • Once it is known whether your exam will take place, MyTimetable and Osiris will be updated with the text 'Exam continues in Q3. For more information look at Brightspace'. If the exam will not take place, students who have registered for it will also receive an email at their TU Delft email address. You will be notified no later than 4 working days in advance whether the exam will take place or be postponed.
  • In most cases, online exams will be customized. However, even in another form the exam will test the same learning goals, so you have to master the same content for it. Should the exam content change, this will be communicated via Brightspace.
  • Since exams are offered online, you can also sit them abroad, as long as you have a stable and fast internet connection and you are available during regular teaching and examination hours. The exams take place at regular TU Delft times, so if you are staying abroad you have to take a potential time difference into account. You sit the exam at the same time as your fellow students.

Internships

Contact the internship agency/International office/Educational and Student Affairs of your faculty if you have any questions about your (intended) internship.

Binding recommendation on continuation of studies (BSA)

Following the agreement made by Dutch universities with the Minister of Education, Culture and Science, TU Delft has decided to adjust the implementation of the Binding Study Advice (BSA) scheme this year. The following applies to the BSA that will be issued at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year:

Positive BSA

Students who started in September 2019 or later and achieve 45 EC or more will automatically receive a positive BSA according to the TU Delft BSA regulation.

Postponement of BSA

  • Students who started in September 2019 or later and pass between 30 EC and 44 EC this academic year will be automatically postponed by the BSA at the end of August.
  • Students who started in September 2019 or later and received a positive interim recommendation in March 2020 (at 22.5 up to and including 30 EC) will automatically receive a postponement from the BSA at the end of August.

In these cases, students must have obtained the 60 credits from the first year at the end of the second year.

Possible postponement

Students who started in September 2019 or later, who achieve less than 30 EC this academic year and who did not receive a positive interim advice in March 2020, will receive a (proposed) negative binding study advice. They can, however, apply for a postponement from the BSA if there are personal circumstances that have negatively influenced their study progress.

If a student is granted a postponement, the student must have obtained 45 credits from the first year or the 60 credits from the first year by the end of the second year of study.

Already had an earlier postponement

Students who have already been granted a BSA postponement will receive a positive binding study advice at the end of August if they meet the BSA standard (45 EC from the first year of study or the first year fully completed). If they do not meet the BSA standard, they can apply for a further postponement if there are personal circumstances that have negatively influenced their study progress.

Procedure for BSA postponement

The procedure for requesting postponement is available on the BSA website. If you have any further questions, please contact your faculty's study advisors.

Meetings with fellow students or supervisors

If you need to collaborate with your fellow students, your (project) group, or if you have an appointment with your supervisor, we insist that you organize this online as much as possible. However, it is allowed to get together with a maximum of 3 students, as long as you keep a distance of at least 1.5 meters from each other.

Online education: instruction for teachers

Teachers have been asked to offer all education online as much as feasible in the coming period. TU Delft has already been developing online education for some time. In order to assist lecturers in providing online education, a site with instructions and all available options, tips, and tools has been produced. You can find it here.

Deadlines registration academic year 2020/2021

For applicants with a Dutch educational background:

  • The application deadline for bachelor's programmes where taking part in the Study Choice Check is mandatory has been postponed to 1 June
  • For programmes without enrolment quota (Dutch: Numerus Fixus), where taking part in the Study Choice Check is voluntary, you can register until 1 September. However, in order to be able to make voluntary use of the Study Choice Check, you should submit your application by 1 June

For applicants with a non-Dutch (international) education background:

The application deadline of 1 April remains unchanged. Due to international measures to fight the spread of COVID-19, not everyone will be able to provide all relevant information before this deadline. Unfortunately, it is not possible to extend this deadline, because we would then be unable to complete the admission procedure correctly. Therefore, should you be unable to submit the necessary documents in time, you will unfortunately not be able to enroll for the academic year 2020-2021. Of course, in that case we can hopefully look forward to your enrolment for the academic year 2021-2022. However, an exception can be made with regard to official transcripts of your previous education. We can take your application into consideration, even if you provide us with an unofficial transcript. Please note that in such a case, you will need to upload official proof of completion of your previous education before the start of the new academic year, in order to complete your enrolment.

Many questions - some awaiting answers

We are in a period of great uncertainty and this gives rise to a lot of questions. We are trying to provide clarity on these questions as far as possible, and as quickly as possible, but at the moment we still do not have all the answers. Unfortunately, in some cases we will not be able to prevent study delays. We have asked teachers to come up with solutions - where possible - for the students who are unable to meet their education obligations as a result of the preventative measures.

We have consulted with the Chairs of the Examination Committees about not being able to take interim examinations and partial tests. They have indicated that they will endeavour to limit the effects resulting from the measures. The Examination Board has already sufficient powers to offer solutions in the event of a study delay. We are also investigating what we can do about other consequences deriving from study delays, for example with regards to visa requirements, scholarships and housing rent.

We advise you to regularly visit both Brightspace and the homepage.

The coronavirus crisis can also cause financial problems for students. DUO's services can provide a solution. This applies to all (former) students of TU Delft. The VSNU is also in talks with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences about compensation for the financial repercussions of this crisis on the universities.
