Engineering Mechanics
The Graduate School on Engineering Mechanics (EM) was founded in 1996 and embraces all internationally important research groups that are active in the field at the technical universities in Eindhoven, Delft, and Twente. The primary aim of the EM Graduate School is to provide additional education and training for PhD students of the participating institutions and to foster scientific contacts and collaboration.

At university level the Dutch Fluid and Solid Mechanics community is organized within two inter-university Research Graduate Schools, namely the JM Burgers Centre for Fluid Mechanics (abbreviated JMBC) and the Engineering Mechanics School for Solid Mechanics (abbreviated EM). Together, these two Research Graduate Schools form the Centre of Competence ā€œFluid and Solid Mechanicsā€ of the 4TU-federation (4TU-FSM), which incorporates the universities of Delft, Eindhoven, Twente, and Wageningen. All academic research groups in The Netherlands with international scientific visibility in the area of fluid and solid mechanics participate in one of the two Graduate Schools. Both JMBC and EM have a very active course program for PhD students, staff, and scientists from industry on various research subjects. Close contact with industry is guaranteed through the industrial advisory boards. At the level of the industry and the technological institutes (like TNO, Marin, NLR, Deltares, NRG) the Dutch Fluid and Solid Mechanics community is organized within the Department of Mechanics of the Royal Dutch Institute of Engineers (KIVI). To strengthen the (inter-)national position of the Dutch Fluid and Solid Mechanics community, the Netherlands Mechanics Committee (NMC) acts as an umbrella organization for the JMBC and EM Graduate Schools and the Section Mechanics of KIVI. The NMC is formally recognized as the Dutch representative organization by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM,, by the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM,, by the European Mechanics Society (EUROMECH, and by the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS). The NMC also carries out the coordination of the activities for a top Master of Science program on Fluid and Solid Mechanics.

NMC (Netherlands Mechanics Committee)
The Netherlands Mechanics Committee (NMC) is a platform for all scientific and engineering activities in The Netherlands in the field of fluid and solid mechanics. The NMC was established in February 2004 and it functions as an umbrella organization for three existing constituent organizations in The Netherlands that are active in the field of fluid and solid mechanics, namely: the Graduate School JM Burgers Centre (fluid mechanics); the Graduate School Engineering Mechanics (solid mechanics), and the Section Mechanics of the Royal Dutch Institute of Engineers (Dutch name: Afdeling Mechanica van KIVI).

The JM Burgers Centre is the Dutch Pilot Centre of ERCOFTAC, the European Research Community On Flow, Turbulence And Combustion. The goal of this organisation is to be the leading European association of research, education and industry groups in the technology of flow, turbulence and combustion. ERCOFTAC Members participate in a network of international collaboration and exchange between industry and research. They have access to data banks with a multitude of experimental, DNS and LES data and specified test cases. They receive, through the ERCOFTAC network, support in preparing proposals for European Community research and training programmes.

The European Mechanics Society EUROMECH is an international non-governmental non-profit scientific organization. The objective of the Society is to engage in all activities intended to promote in Europe the development of mechanics as a branch of science and engineering. Mechanics deals with motion, flow and deformation of matter, be it fluid or solid, under the action of applied forces, and with any associated phenomena. Activities within the field of mechanics range from fundamental research on the behaviour of fluids and solids to applied research in engineering. The society is governed by a Council whose members are being elected according to rules set in Statutes. The Council has overall responsibility for the organisation of various international meetings: EUROMECH Colloquia and the European Conferences on fluid and solid mechanics.

The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) is the international umbrella organisation in the field of fluid and solid mechanics. Each adhering organisation in this area has representatives in the General Assembly. International meetings, such as the ICTAM conference and the IUTAM Symposia are organised under auspices of this worldwide organisation.

The International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM), is a non-profit organization, founded in 1968 to favour the exchange and application of the most advanced knowledge in the mechanical sciences, in interdisciplinary fields like robotics, biomechanics, environmental engineering and in other fields (mathematics, information and system theory, operations research, computer science, artificial intelligence). CISM is international in both scope and structure: the Scientific Council, rectors, lecturers are selected from among the acknowledged authorities in their respective fields the world over. Located in the Palazzo del Torso in the centre of Udine (I), the CISM facilities include a few lecture halls and the Centreā€™s secretariat. The principal activity of CISM is the organization of courses, seminars, workshops, symposia, and conferences to present the state of the art of these sciences to researchers.

Von Karman Institute (VKI)
VKI is a non-profit international educational and scientific organisation, hosting three departments (aeronautics and aerospace, environmental and applied fluid dynamics, and turbomachinery & propulsion). It provides post-graduate education in fluid dynamics (research master in fluid dynamics, former ā€œVKI Diploma Courseā€, doctoral program, short training program and lecture series) and encourages ā€œtraining in research through researchā€. The Von Karman Institute undertakes and promotes research in the field of fluid dynamics. Extensive research on experimental, computational and theoretical aspects of gas and liquid flows is carried out at the VKI under the direction of the faculty and research engineers, sponsored mainly by governmental and international agencies as well as industries. The Von Karman Institute organizes each year 8 to 12 one-week Lecture Series on specialized topics in the field of aerodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer with application to aeronautics, space, turbomachinery, the environment and industrial fluid dynamics.

The Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers (KIVI) was founded in 1847 by three engineers under protection of His Royal Highness King Willem II, Prince of Orange. Nowadays, with over 20,000 members, KIVI is the professional association of engineers in the Netherlands. KIVI offers its members different communities for specific and multidisciplinary knowledge. Besides, it provides a platform for addressing social challenges, and it offers its members the possibility of branding and career development. KIVI consists of more than sixty regional and discipline-based sections. All engineering disciplines are represented at KIVI. They organize activities such as lectures, debates, symposia, company visits and more. The fluid and solid mechanics groups at the Dutch universities have the strongest links with the section Mechanics.

NWO Domain Science
Until 2017 the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) operated as a rather autonomous foundation, responsible for the physics division of the national research council NWO, with the aim of promoting, co-ordinating and financing fundamental physics research in the Netherlands. In 2017, as part of a larger reorganisation, FOM was incorporated in NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO. A part of the FOM Office (the granting part) is now part of the NWO Domain Science. This part of the former FOM, together with the former NWO divisions Chemical and Exact Sciences and Earth and Life Sciences, forms the new NWO Domain Science. Besides individual research projects, this Domain also finances larger research programmes and so-called Industrial Partnership Programmes.

In 2017, the Technology Foundation STW was converted into the NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES), or, in Dutch: NWO Toegepaste en Technische Wetenschappen (TTW). As part of the larger NWO organisation, AES (or TTW) aims at stimulating excellent scientific research at the Dutch universities and promoting industrial and technological applications. This is done by funding excellent technical scientific research and by bringing researchers and users together in well-focussed research projects. In the past, various academic fluid mechanics groups have obtained important funding from STW, and AES provides the right framework to continue this financial support. Larger programmes such as TTW Perspectief also have interesting funding possibilities for fluid-dynamics related research.

UK Fluids Network
The UK Fluids Network (UKFN) is a recently founded network of academic and industrial research groups in the UK, focused on innovative developments and applications in Fluid Mechanics. The Network activities have started in the course of 2016 with funding from EPSRC. The UKFN will fund Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings, Short Research Visits (SRVs), and a website containing resources for all fluid mechanics researchers.
