Vevox: Enhancing engagement through interactive learning at TU Delft

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, it's important to keep innovating and enhancing the tools that empower educators and engage students. TU Delft introduced Vevox as the new campus-wide polling tool solution at the start of the academic year 2023/2024. Vevox, an audience engagement tool, has redefined how students and lecturers interact during face-to-face, remote, or hybrid learning settings, including seminars, workshops, meetings, and events.

The decision to adopt Vevox as the new polling tool was fuelled by a need for change. Despite having an existing campus-wide solution, it became clear that academic staff were using different polling tools that lacked central support and failed to meet TU Delft's educational tooling standards.

To address this challenge, the Digital Excellence for Education Programme of ESA started research to understand why lecturers were using different polling tools and what requirements were necessary for an effective campus-wide solution. The previous solution's complexity in setup, lack of features to ensure anonymity as default, and concerns regarding data privacy with non-supported tools highlighted the necessity for a more comprehensive and user-friendly solution.

Subsequently, a rigorous selection process was initiated, aligning with TU Delft's procurement procedures. After inviting five vendors to submit their proposals, four were selected to participate in the assessment process, guided by lecturers and support staff. Vevox emerged as the clear winner in June 2023.

The technical implementation of Vevox was carried out during the summer, ensuring that by July, all TU Delft users with a staff netID could access it through a Single-Sign-On (SSO). The early adopters were provided with training, and additional training sessions for lecturers were arranged, facilitating widespread adoption.

The response from lecturers and staff has been overwhelmingly positive. Vevox's ease of use, performance with large audiences also on non-teaching setting, and the versatility of question types, including the "pin-on-image" feature, have been particularly praised.

What Lecturers Say About Vevox:

My impression is that it’s straightforward and easy to work with for students. It also helps to keep students engaged and active, without distractions, as scanning the QR code and responding is quick.

― Bahareh Abdikivanani, Introduction to Python Programming

I use Vevox in the Introduction to Electrical Engineering course. I have about 150 students in class (in person). It helps collect input from students. I particularly enjoy word clouds. We also use Vevox in mentorship, and my favorite feature is to 'pin on the image.

― Ilke Ercan, Introduction to Electrical Engineering

TU Delft maintains a close partnership with the Vevox team to further improve the tool's usability across the campus. Open communication and ongoing discussions about features and improvements ensure that the tool evolves in sync with the university's needs.
