After his PhD in physics at the University of Amsterdam, Peter has worked on fuel cell technology and wind energy. Peter has established the Fibre Metal Laminates Centre of Competence (FMLC) in Delft in 2001 and Fokker Engineering Romania in Bucharest in 2004, and was co-founder and director of ThermoPlastic Reserch Center in Enschede in 2009. Peter was Fokker’s Program Director for Boeing Commercial Airplanes from 2005 to 2008 and responsible for the 747 Large Cargo Freighter Pressure Bulkhead, the 737 MMA Wingtips and the 747-8 Flaps programs. Between 2008 and 2016, Peter has coordinated the Dutch Clusters in Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft and Ecodesign in the EU Clean Sky program. As Manager of the Fokker Technology Office he coordinates the Technology, the funding and the eco-system. Peter is also the Fokker IP Manager.

Abstract

The presentation starts with a brief introduction of GKN Global & Aerospace Division and the Fokker Product Strategy. Next a brief history and background will be presented of FML development and current application of FML / Glare. The core of the presentation deals with the development of a business case for next generation single aisle aircraft FML fuselage panels. The targets and the development steps up to TRL 4/5 are presented. Automation of the manufacturing and quality assurance process is key to achieve the required volume and cost levels. At the end of the presentation the next steps are presented.
