He now focusses on the ethics of influence and the concept of manipulation. His goal is to understand positive influence and distinguish it from negative influence, crucial in the design of new (automated) technology and for our social well-being.

This year's Van Hasselt Lecture at TU Delft was delivered by philosopher Samuel Scheffler (NYU). During Scheffler’s stay in Delft, the Delft Digital Ethics Centre organized a workshop on Values and Valuing in Virtual Life with Samuel Scheffler as guest of honor.

Bij de ontwikkeling van nieuwe technologie is het belangrijk dat er ook naar de ethische overwegingen en maatschappelijke waarden wordt gekeken. Denk aan zaken zoals privacy, duurzaamheid en beveiliging. Maar wist je dat ook rechtvaardigheid kan en moet worden meegenomen? Dit thema krijgt vooralsnog helaas minder aandacht, maar is daarom niet minder belangrijk. Het instituut Design for Values van de Technische Universiteit Delft heeft daarom justice (rechtvaardigheid) gekozen als jaarthema. Hiermee wil het instituut bewustwording creëren en handvatten bieden voor het integreren van rechtvaardigheidsvragen in ontwerpprocessen. Wij spreken met Ibo van de Poel, wetenschappelijk directeur, over het belang van deze waarde.
