New Series by Studium Generale SG in Conversation

In this series, Studium Generale talks to young trailblazers who each stand out of the crowd in their own way. Let’s listen to their stories and find out what we can learn from them.

Establishing a continuous dialogue about diversity and inclusion is essential in creating and maintaining an inclusive and safe space in which everyone can flourish, both on the TU Delft campus and in Delft. In dialogue, we can start to understand each other, how we are different, but perhaps more importantly, also what we have in common. In order to create more understanding for one another (and therefore hopefully more space for diversity and inclusion), Studium Generale starts in 2022 with its new program ‘SG In Conversation’, a series of conversations for student, TU Delft staff and other people from Delft. Through these conversations, SG wants to bring closer different lifestyles and perspectives of students from different groups in Delft.

SG In Conversation is a series of conversations between a young moderator and an inspiring student or young professional. During every event of the series, a different guest is invited to talk about his, her or their life(s). In an informal setting off-campus, the moderator will go into conversation with this guest. Alternating guests are invited that are role models for a wide-range of different student groups. In this way, the guest acts as the binding factor between different student perspectives: the conversation therefore transcends different themes and focuses on commonalities between people rather than differences. By experiencing and discussing the conversation together, different people are brought together and invited to listen, talk and engage with one another.

The conversations take place on Tuesday nights in exhibition space 38CC, next to the main square of Delft. After a 30-minute walk-in, the conversation starts. This takes about 60 minutes, leaving plenty of time for an informal drink afterwards with the visitors. This is a good moment for everyone to discuss and reflect together on the conversation. The events will be free (including a drink afterwards). In order to include international students and TU Delft staff, the events will be in English. The conversations will take place five times a year. The distribution of the events throughout the year leaves room to organise supporting activities with partners. In this way, efforts can be combined into more coherent, campus-wide narratives on diversity, inclusion, and related topics.

Themes

Different themes will be discussed, depending on the guest that is invited. Potential topics during the conversations can be feminism, equality (gender, skin color, religion, ..), sexual and gender identity, the role of education, role models and responsibilities of students, experiences regarding diversity and inclusion, activism, physical and mental wellbeing and more. The starting point and therefore recurring theme in all nights will be ‘identity’.
