The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the world and transforming the landscape of scientific research. However, within the field of chemical and process engineering, the integration of AI is still in its early stages. That’s the reason why I am here: can we exploit novel AI technologies to speed up the development of new sustainable chemical processes?

My name is Giacomo Lastrucci and I come from the wonderful region of Tuscany in Italy. In 2023, I joined the Process and Product Engineering section of the Chemical Engineering department of TU Delt as a PhD candidate. Over the next four years, I will be working in the Process Intelligence Research team, under the guidance of Professor Artur Schweidtmann. Our group is dedicated to bridging the gap between Chemical Engineering and AI.

In my role, I will be specifically exploring novel modeling techniques, incorporating scientific machine learning and physical knowledge to tackle the complex multi-scale modeling and large-scale optimization of chemical plants.

My journey in the field of Chemical Engineering began with my bachelor's degree at the University of Pisa. I furthered my studies at Politecnico di Milano, where I completed my Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. I had the opportunity to be a visiting student at TU Delft, conducting my master's thesis project under the guidance of Professor Schweidtmann. It was during this period that I embarked on my exploration of artificial intelligence.

By combining my educational background, research focus, and previous experience, I am excited to contribute to the intersection of Chemical Engineering and AI, as we strive to shape a more sustainable future for the process industry.

Outside of research, I am passionate about cooking, travelling, sport and music.
