Faculty position in (experimental) physics

 

The Department of Quantum Nanoscience (QN) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) invites candidates for a tenure track assistant professor position to complement, extend and strengthen the department’s competence in the fields of quantum matter, quantum transduction and quantum sensing.

The potential of quantum technology extends far beyond computation and communication. By focusing on basic research on various manifestations of quantum physics, we aim to offer avenues for quantum innovation in the broadest sense. Relevant focus areas for this search include new strategies to design, build and characterise quantum materials, the robust conversion of quantum information between different systems by means of transduction, and novel avenues to exploit the strong responsiveness of quantum system towards improved sensing devices. These areas of research represent central components for any form of quantum technologies, and play a unique role in our ongoing endeavor to unlock the tremendous potential for innovation that lies in the quantum world.

We are looking for a promising scientist with recognized expertise in any of these areas from fundamental and/or technological perspectives. We are interested in particular in candidates whose research focuses in the study of novel applications of quantum matter effects, such as those based on topology, symmetry and coherence, as well as of high-responsiveness quantum sensors and transducers. The research direction of the candidate should allow for significant synergies with the existing activities within the department.

Candidates should have a successful scientific track record and be able to formulate an independent research program addressing current scientific and technological challenges. The candidate is expected to participate in the teaching of courses offered by the Applied Physics faculty both at the undergraduate and at the graduate level. Consideration of applications for a tenured associate or full professor level position may be given to exceptionally well qualified individuals.

  • Excellent researcher, as evidenced by appropriate track record
  • Passion for teaching and interactive knowledge transfer
  • Good international network, linking science to application
  • Proficient in English.

Contract Terms

Salary (ranges from 3.637 to 5.656 for Assistant Professor, (full time based)) and the benefits of 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus on top of nominal salary and a minimum of 30 holidays per year, are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Department:

The QN department comprises an internationally oriented research environment aiming for the understanding of physical processes at the nanoscale and the development of novel quantum materials and devices, innovative fabrication and measurement techniques, and advances theoretical models. The research at QN is focused on research for fundamental scientific and technological breakthroughs, and also for the development of novel applications of quantum effects that enable the development of quantum computer components and ultra- sensitive detectors for single photons. The research at QN is supported by state-of-the-art facilities such as the cleanroom facility Kavli Nanolab Delft. Together with the Department of Bionanoscience (BN), QN and QuTech constitute the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft (KIND) established by the US-based Kavli Foundation.
