Dr. ir. Kuijk, J.I. van

Jasper van Kuijk is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.

Research

Jasper was the founder and leader of the Expertise Centre for E-ticketing in Public Transport (X-CEPT) in which graduation students and researchers study and explore solutions to improve the user experience of public transit ticketing. The lab collaborates intensely with governments and companies, and has become an important voice in the sector.

In X-CEPT Jasper pioneered the Delft Design Labs format, currently applied more broadly at IDE, in which graduation students, researchers and external organizations collaborate to explore solutions to (societal) issues.

Van Kuijk holds a PhD in industrial design engineering on how companies deal with usability in the development of electronic consumer products. He conducted his PhD research as part of the Design for Usability project, for which he co-authored the project proposal. In 2009 he spent time as a pre-doctoral research fellow with Donald Norman at Northwestern University’s Segal Design Institute and MMM-program.

Teaching

In our Design for Interaction (DfI) Master’s programme, Jasper supervises graduation students, gives lectures, and coaches students in the UXAD-course on user testing and interaction design (ID4256). Previously he was coordinator of this course. In 2017 students of the DfI program named him most inspiring teacher of the Master’s programme.

Dissemination

Jasper believes that user-centered innovation benefits from an understanding and appreciation of design beyond just designers. Therefore, he regularly gives presentations at companies, universities and governments, and writes a weekly column for the Dutch national newspaper 'De Volkskrant’ in which he dissects design flaws in contemporary design. During his PhD project he started a weblog (‘the product usability weblog’) about his research topic, which proved valuable as a platform for dialogue with design practitioners. He also developed a card set to communicate the insights from his PhD thesis to design practitioners.

  MSc in Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. Specialized in human-product interaction and user-centered product innovation. Graduated at Philips Research in the ‘Ambient Intelligent Lighting’ project, interned at the user interface department of Ericsson Mobile Communications (Lund, SE).
