The world needs radical change. How does IDE drive sustainability transitions through design?
We face an environmental emergency: extreme weather, oceans polluted by plastic, a loss of natural habitats and biodiversity. At the same time, the world’s resources are unequally consumed: some communities apparently have it all, while others have far too little. We need radical change.
At the TU Delft Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, we want to approach sustainable living not as a lifestyle choice but as the smart and logical choice, hard-wired into the design of products, services and systems. This means clever designs with scarcity, pollution, and reuse in mind to eliminate waste and minimise pressure on the environment.
We think about planet-friendly approaches throughout the design process - from defining and researching problems to delivering solutions. Researchers at IDE develop tools, strategies, and methos to help design teams, communities and decision makers to develop sustainable products, services, and systems.

DiCEThe healthcare industry is a major producer of global CO2 emissions, material waste and other pollution. With the use of digital health devices predicted to grow 20 per cent by 2027, the European Union has developed sixteen ethical principles for digital health, four of which focus on environmental sustainability. How can we use design to shape a more sustainable digital healthcare industry?
RePlanItInformation and Communication Technology hardware (e.g. laptops and data servers) is typically only used for an average of three to four years before being thrown out. The ICT sector currently contributes to 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This impact is mainly generated in the production phase of the equipment. In addition, IT hardware utilizes many critical materials.Extracting these raw materials produces a lot of CO2 but the recycling rates of these materials is close to zero. There needs to be a more sustainabel solution to using ICT products.
TULIPSThere is an urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, aviation generates 14% of the EU's greenhouse gasses from transportation. Thus airports can play a major role in making aviation climate neutral. This includes addressing CO2 emissions by enabling shifts in travel modes (e.g. replacing short-haul flights by rail), using lower-emission aircrafts, and reducing the amount of material waste exiting airports.
LICHEN-BLADESWhile they contribute to the growth of renewable energy, wind turbines also contribute to landfill waste and emissions upon decommissioning. The blades of these turbines are especially difficult to recycle because they are made from composite materials. With an average life span of 25 years and the continuous growth of wind energy, it is estimated that 325,000 tonnes of wind turbine blade waste will be produced annually in Europe until 2050. This unsustainable material sourcing and waste problem needs to be tackled with transdisciplinary strategies that take the end-of-life of the blades into consideration from the design stages.
Safe-by-DesignExposure to hazardous substances and substances of concern can have negative consequences on both human health and the environment. Moreover, designing a product with circularity in mind can increase its level of complexity, as it involves different approaches to prolonging the life-cycle of a product. This can lead to new pathways that allow substances to be released or exposed (e.g. end-of-life treatments, product re-use in other contexts, prolonged degradation). Therefore, product design should ensure that the release of or the exposure to these substances throughout the lifecycle of products is eliminated.
EnergeWith the ageing of the existing post-primary school building stock there is a need for low-cost solutions that enable long-term resource efficiency in schools and reduced greenhouse gas emission (GHG). Building energy directives and climate actions to 2020 – 2030 by the European Union underpin this necessity. ENERGE addresses this need using targeted physical interventions that combine a data-enabled platform and building sensors with behavioural and social studies as well as new educational approaches that enable schools engage in energy and GHG mitigation.
The Operator of the FutureMany companies in the manufacturing industry are already transitioning towards a digital, smart industry paradigm, and more will do so in the near future. This transition will have a great impact on production processes and on the people who are part of these processes. Newly adopted technologies will increase the demand for employees with the necessary knowledge and skills. The Operator of the Future project addresses this challenge and aims to contribute to a ‘smart’ collaboration between humans and technology.
ReCiPSSHow can we create circular products and services that are attractive to users? And how can we help designers develop products that are remanufacturable and fully circular? This what the EU project ReCiPSS explores by looking into the success factors for circular business models. Two large-scale pilots, one automotive and one white goods, are in development through close collaboration with Bosch and Gorenje.
RELEASEThe energy transition is one of the most significant societal challenges of the coming decades. It requires a profound transformation of the power sector, the industry sector, the mobility sector, agriculture and the built environment. Decarbonization of these sectors can only be achieved by extensive electrification, based on renewable sources instead of fossil sources.
Designing Rhythms for Social Resilience (DRSR)The Designing Rhythms for Social Resilience (DRSR) project explores rhythm as a new methodology for policy-making, which aims to enhance the sharing of culture and increase the social resilience of neighbourhoods. This project investigates how people process their life experiences within cities and examines how these experiences are increasingly being documented with urban data. Through the participation of residents, civil servants and creative industries, we are able to analyse physical and digital data rhythms in Amsterdam.
