Planet Earth’s ecosystems are under great strain. The global population is growing rapidly and our climate is changing.
Pollution, the depletion of resources, and overconsumption are just some of the issues that we face. Governments and NGOs are responding to these global challenges with sustainability goals and political commitments. Design research has a role to play here too. By developing technological and social innovations which disrupt the status quo, design can be a catalyst for systemic change.
Sustainability research at Delft’s Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) focuses on how individuals and organisations can produce and consume sustainably. Our researchers take a human-centred approach to understanding and exploring sustainable production and consumption patterns. We set-up real-life interventions to optimise systems that make better use of resources and minimise waste. We explore new circular business models and create guidelines for design professionals. Our aim is to help organisations develop sustainable products and services.

Stifling high temperatures, exacerbated by the heat island phenomenon are not only unpleasant, but they are also silent killers. The elderly and people with underlying medical conditions such as cardiac disease are particularly vulnerable.
The Operator of the FutureMany companies in the manufacturing industry are already transitioning towards a digital, smart industry paradigm, and more will do so in the near future. This transition will have a great im-pact on production processes and on the people who are part of these processes. Newly adopt-ed technologies will increase the demand for employees with the necessary knowledge and skills. The Operator of the Future project addresses this challenge and aims to contribute to a ‘smart’ collaboration between humans and technology.
Designing Rhythms for Social Resilience (DRSR)The Designing Rhythms for Social Resilience (DRSR) project explores rhythm as a new methodology for policy-making, which aims to enhance the sharing of culture and increase the social resilience of neighbourhoods. This project investigates how people process their life experiences within cities and examines how these experiences are increasingly being documented with urban data. Through the participation of residents, civil servants and creative industries, we are able to analyse physical and digital data rhythms in Amsterdam.
RELEASEThe energy transition is one of the most significant societal challenges of the coming decades. It requires a profound transformation of the power sector, the industry sector, the mobility sector, agriculture and the built environment. Decarbonization of these sectors can only be achieved by extensive electrification, based on renewable sources instead of fossil sources.
ReCiPSSHow can we create circular products and services that are attractive to users? And how can we help designers develop products that are remanufacturable and fully circular? This what the EU project ReCiPSS explores by looking into the success factors for circular business models. Two large-scale pilots, one automotive and one white goods, are in development through close collaboration with Bosch and Gorenje.
EnergeWith the ageing of the existing post-primary school building stock there is a need for low-cost solutions that enable long-term resource efficiency in schools and reduced greenhouse gas emission (GHG). Building energy directives and climate actions to 2020 – 2030 by the European Union underpin this necessity. ENERGE addresses this need using targeted physical interventions that combine a data-enabled platform and building sensors with behavioural and social studies as well as new educational approaches that enable schools engage in energy and GHG mitigation.

3D printing metamaterialsImagine wanting to construct a personalised bike saddle, but the materials at your disposal are either too stiff for some parts of the buttocks or too soft for others… Creating a product that has different parts, each with unique requirements, often requires the use of different materials. But innovations in 3D printing are changing this by making it possible to create objects with spatial gradations in surface and volumetric properties – in other words, functionally graded materials (FGMs). These engineered metamaterials go beyond the characteristics found in naturally occurring materials. For his PhD, Tim Kuipers explored how toolpath generation and a manufacturing technique called fused filament fabrication (FFF) can be used to create more complex objects with varying material properties.
