The state of human health is evolving. In many countries people are enjoying longer lives.
But this increase in longevity is coupled with an increase in chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease which may have gone undiagnosed in the past. The high costs of healthcare and the need for more medical staff already poses a challenge. However emerging digital technologies offer the potential for more responsive, personalised healthcare.
At the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) our research brings a human-centered design approach to the domains of prevention, care and cure. We have a particular research interest in autonomous ageing, the patient care and the patient journey. How can people live healthy and socially meaningful lives? How can we make healthcare services accessible to all?
Healthcare is facing enormous challenges requiring a concerted effort from a wide variety of scientific disciplines. The Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at Delft – with our deep understanding of what people want, how organisations work and what emerging technology might offer - has a huge role to play in this.Richard Goossens, Professor of Physical Ergonomics
Getting personal with dementia careCaring for people with dementia is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. That’s because people have different personalities, life experiences and preferences. Taking these things into account, Gubing Wang’s PhD explored how to facilitate designers and healthcare professionals with designing for personalised dementia care.
Value@WORK: Value-Driven Care for Labor and HealthOur health care is increasingly moving beyond the hospital walls. To answer new demands for care, new ways of collaboration are needed between all healthcare professionals involved and the patient. In the Netherlands, there is growing attention for Value-Based Health Care (VBHC), a concept of quality of care with an emphasis on using patient experiences for learning and improvement. Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft and Amsterdam UMC work together on these care issues within the domain of Work and Health in the Value@WORK project.
Design for Urban HeatwavesWith the effects of climate change manifesting themselves in our society more each year, urban heatwaves are a new phenomenon the Netherlands have to deal with. They do not leave a trail of visible destruction like earthquakes, tsunamis and pandemics. Instead, these crises are ‘silent-killers’, where periods of excessive heat and high humidity hit vulnerable groups in cities, such as the elderly, especially hard.
Enduring Rewards“Tomorrow, I’m going to start eating healthy again. And I’ll start exercising twice a week!” We’ve all told ourselves this at least once. This has a good reason, as research has shown that a healthy lifestyle can extend life expectancy with six years. The question everyone’s struggling with is: “how to keep going and maintain the progress I’ve made?”
Pride and Prejudice: Chronic disease preventionObesity is a serious threat to people’s general health, but remains a hard problem to tackle. We know that physical activity and diet are two key factors for a healthy lifestyle. But these aspects are not only difficult to modify for people on the long-term, they are also difficult to measure. The Pride and Prejudice research project combines the development of programs of design interventions with real-life monitoring and evaluation of the long-term effectiveness of these combined interventions.

From bottled water to doctorMost people, according to PhD candidate Mirjam Visser, say they want to shop sustainably but few consumers actually purchase the most environmentally-friendly option when shopping. For her thesis research, she set out to understand why some consumers will buy green options while others won’t - and how to encourage people to make more sustainable choices.
