Delft Design always starts with asking questions.

How can we make it sustainable? Who is affected by this? Where is the solution space? How can we prepare for future scenarios? What is design?

At TU Delft | Industrial Design Engineering, we are experts in tackling these questions, which is  an expertise that we have developed for more than half a century. Today our 350 design researchers and teachers develop this knowledge for our 2.000+ design students and for designers worldwide to shape impact by design.

How we do this?

With impactful design as a methodological and social, rather than a solo activity. We bring method to the madness, and we don’t just rely on individual strokes of genius. This is especially important as challenges around the globe and in our neighbourhoods increase in complexity, for instance regarding  sustainability, healthcare, mobility and artificial intelligence. Individual Eureka-moments alone are simply insufficient.

By means of design research, we develop key methods and tools. These help designers combine insights from not just technological and ecological developments, but also an understanding of the human condition and the nature of our organisations. Methods and tools offer a framework in which impactful design can bring shape – in the form of a sketch or a prototype for instance - so it can be experienced and evaluated, whether as a product, digital service or strategy.

The knowledge we build and the accompanying methodologies underpin our evidence-based, impact-led approach – the burning flame of Delft Design.
