Drs. Mazerant, E.B.

Emile Mazerant is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. His main research interests are in innovation by design, social dynamics in reframing activities and effectivity of interventions in (organizational) innovation processes.

Research Profile

Innovation professionals, including design practitioners, often feel as if they are pushing rope when trying to land their ideas in the target context, especially with the more radical (frame) changes. In almost twenty years of experience in innovation, Emile has experienced that acceptance is not always about the idea itself, but also influenced by social dynamic factors between involved actors. His research focuses on what social dynamic factors are of influence on the effectivity of interventions in reframing activities, and how. Since (societal) problems are becoming increasingly complex and oftentimes require a different perspective on the problem, his aim is to build theory and provide insights on how to improve our interventions in bringing about such innovations in a smoother way. 

He considers innovation to be the socio-interactive process of introducing something new into an existing context - which for absorption will have to change. To do so, people involved in innovation processes resort to all kinds of interventions. He wonders, what is the nature of the relationship of involved actors in effective reframing activities (interventions)? How do expert designers and innovation professionals go about?
