De brand bij ExxonMobil en de brand en lekkage bij Shell Pernis in de Rotterdamse haven deden de gemoederen de afgelopen maanden hoog oplopen. De Rotterdamse gemeenteraad maakt zich na de incidenten zorgen over de hoge leeftijd van de raffinaderijen en drong aan op tijdige vervanging van installaties. De Raad is niet de enige met zorgen over de leeftijd van assets in de industrie. Recent heeft de Inspectie SZW aangegeven dat de risico’s rondom ageing door sommige bedrijven wordt onderschat. Pieter van Gelder, hoogleraar veiligheidskunde aan de TU Delft, denkt dat de Inspectie dit terecht concludeert.

The newly established 4TU Centre on Resilience Engineering received funding for a research programme to design Systems for Informed Resilience Engineering (DeSIRE). A changing climate and growing population in a world that is more and more interconnected, make societies vulnerable to incidents, disasters and prolonged stress. We need resilient systems in society to deal with challenges such as climate change, migration, the energy transition and disruptive shocks such as hurricanes and floods.

The European Research Council has awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to TPM professor Ibo van de Poel. In the coming five years, he and his research team will develop a philosophical theory of value change that can be used to improve the ability of complex sociotechnical systems such as gas infrastructure, blockchains, energy grids and self-driving cars to adapt to changing values.

As per 1 September 2018, professor Neelke Doorn will succeed professor Ernst ten Heuvelhof as Director of Education. Neelke has worked in the VTI Ethics and Philosophy of Technology research group since 2007. She was appointed Antoni van Leeuwenhoek professor in Ethics of Water Engineering in 2017.
