Electronic music production is a way of making music on your own computer. Using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), you can arrange, record and create your very own sounds. EDM (electronic dance music) artists like Martin Garrix, Skrillex and Daft Punk are more popular than ever before, and more and more people have started making their own music in their wake. You can use DAWs to create all sorts of different genres and sounds, the possibilities really are endless. With electronic music production, you’ll learn how to produce your very own chart-topping hits!

In the individual course on Electronic Music Production, you’ll learn how to turn an ordinary computer into a powerful music studio and how to create your very own sound. We’ll explore how to quickly turn creative ideas into actual music. The course will show you how to create a track from start to finish. Below is a list of topics covered in the course.

  • How to use and navigate a DAW (music software).
  • How to record vocals and instruments
  • When and how to use plugins such as equalisers, compressors, limiters, distortion etc.
  • How to make your tracks sound professional with mixing and mastering
  • How to create catchy arrangements, build-ups, drops, intros and more
  • How to start and finish tracks quickly and easily
  • How to change samples and get creative sounds
  • How to work with synth plugins

Niels Lock

Niels is a DJ and producer from Delft. He specialises in music with a huge summer factor. Moombahton, Afro House and Eclectic music are the main genres that influence his music production. He already has more than 250,000 streams of his own productions. From 2023, Niels will share his knowledge at X.

To participate in this course, you will need a laptop and DAW software of your choice. We recommend: FL Studio, Ableton Live Lite or Reaper.

X has one Music Production Kit that you can borrow, provided you have a valid X subscription and the Music Production Certificate.
Recording equipment included in the kit:

  • RØDE NT1-A large diaphragm microphone with dustbag
  • RØDE Deluxe Spider M6 shock mount
  • RØDE pop filter
  • Microphone table stand round base

In addition, make sure you bring your own equipment:

  • Laptop
  • DAW software (i.e. Reaper, FL Studio, Ableton Live)
  • Headphones (over ear, half open or closed, large jack)
  • Mouse (recommended)

Music Production Certificate
You can get the Music Production Certificate by successfully completing the X-course (Electronic) Music Production or if you can demonstrate that you have already gained sufficient experience elsewhere.

You can apply for the certificate by sending an e-mail to hosts-x@tudelft.nl. We will check with the course teacher and/or the music department coordinator whether you meet the required conditions. If so, we will digitally add the certificate to your webshop account. From then on, you will have the possibility to reserve the Music Production Kit in the webshop.
