Looking back at the Visual Science of Art Conference 2022

News - 12 September 2022 - Communication

Did you get a chance to attend the 2022 Visual Science of Art Conference (VSAC) in Amsterdam? If not, don’t worry. We’re here to tell you all about it and to get you excited for next year’s edition.

The Visual Science of Art Conference took place from 24 – 27 August in and around Amsterdam’s Oudemanhuispoort. Its aim was to bring together artists and scientists who shared an interest in the visual aspects of art. The result? 130 scientists and artists from 20 countries gathered for a four-day event.

Nearly half of the symposia at VSAC were created by members. This included the opening symposium, “Realities of Geometrics”, organised by TU Delft postdoctoral researcher (Computer Graphics and Visualization group), Martin Skrodski. The opening symposium also featured a presentation by IDE Associate Professor Dave Murray-Rust. It was entitled, “Material Deformations of Penrose Tiling”.

Other highlights included a tutorial on AI generated art; artistic keynotes by Tine Melzer, Floris Schönfeld, Coralie Vogelaar, and Edwin Zwakman; a special symposium about the Nightwatch; and a wonderful evening in Amsterdam’s What is Happening Here Gallery.

About the organisers

The conference was co-organised by members of IDE’s Perceptual Intelligence Lab (Maarten Wijntjes, Jeroen Stumpel, Catelijne van Middelkoop, Cehao Yu, and Yuguang Zhao) and the University of Amsterdam’s Art History department.

In addition to the main organising committee, several enthusiastic IDE students volunteered to help during the conference. The students, of whom included DfI MSc student David Tiemstra (who designed the wonderful riso-print programme booklet), helped create a much-anticipated meeting after a two year (COVID-related) absence.
