Every year, thousands of patients suffer nerve damage in the pelvis during rectal surgery, leaving them with incontinence and sexual problems, for example. Noeska Smit has developed a method to make these nerves more visible to surgeons. She will be awarded a doctorate for her work on the subject at TU Delft on Monday, 31 October.

TU Delft is set to collaborate with ABN AMRO on the development of more complex blockchain applications. The aim is to deliver a secure, working application in just six months. In addition to developing the application, ABN AMRO staff will also attend courses on blockchain applications in the TU Delft Blockchain Lab.

Kees Oosterlee (DIAM) will be holding a lecture on October 25th at Theater de Veste on the history of money. He will be using fun anecdotes to illustrate his story. It all ends at the bitcoin. Do we trust it or would we rather stick to our trusted 'normal' system?

On October 17th Martin Skutella (Matheon) and Kees Vuik (Numerical Analyses and 4TU.AMI) joined forces. Matheon is a collaboration of universities in Berlin and two national math research foundations. 4TU.AMI is the collaboration between the three technical universities in The Netherlands and the agricultural university of Wageningen. Matheon and 4TU.AMI will work together on mathematical research, education and applications in e.g. industry, hospitals and banking. Together they are now the largest cluster in Europe in applied mathematics.

Eelco Visser (Programming Languages Research group) brings the OOPSLA / Splash conference to Amsterdam. It will be the first time in its 30 years existence that the conference will take place outside of North America. OOPSLA is interesting for researchers and software engineers and is all about innovative new coding languages and systems. This year there are keynotes of Benjamin Pierce, Simon Peyton Jones en Marin Odersky.

On Friday 14th October, we've established a new world record. At 9.00 hours more than 10.000 children in primary schools throughout the Netherlands made their first steps in coding. They used the MOOC of Felienne Hermans of TU Delft: 'Scratch'.

Hamid Mushtaq, Hani Alers and Zaid Al-Ars from the Computer Engineering Lab won the $25000 2nd prize in the Big Data Apache Spark hackathon competition. The team worked on a framework to enable a high performance and low-cost computation of DNA analysis programs using Big Data techniques. The results were announced during the Data First Event in New York City.

On Wednesday, 12 October, Executive Board President Tim van der Hagen, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Rob Fastenau, Head of the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy Miro Zeman, and Pavol Bauer, who leads the Direct Current (DC) Systems, Energy Conversion & Storage group, presented the first solar-powered wireless charging station for electric bikes.

The programme starts at 11:30 with the presentation of the “Solar e-Bike Charging Station” by Tim van der Hagen, Rob Fastenau and Miro Zeman (TU Delft) on 12 October at the FreeZone D of the TU Delft Campus (next to the EWI faculty).

Today is the day of the grand opening of the e-bike station built by prof. Pavol Bauer and his team. It is part of the living campus and a research project to create 'smarter' cities. This station is new and innovative because of the wireless charging through the stand of the bike.

EWI alumni Omar Link, Simon van der Jagt and their start-up start-up Nowi Energy won in the category 'internet of things' on the annual USWC (University Startup World Cup) in Copenhagen on 3rd October. The young entrepreneurs were even invited to speak with the queen of Denmark!

Today's digital world increasingly brings with it large quantities of digital multimedia, combining image, sound, text and other modes of communication. In order to organise, find and make this information usable, smart technology is needed. From 15-19 October, Amsterdam plays host to the 24th International ACM Multimedia Conference, where more than 500 international experts from the academic world and industry will meet to share the latest research developments in this field. The event is being organised by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

"The sun is a solution," concluded Prof. Arno Smets in his inaugural address given at TU Delft on Wednesday, 28 September. Smets and his group at TU Delft envisage all energy provision being based on sustainable energy sources in the near future. The use of solar energy requires more attention in his opinion, especially because of its high returns and low cost.

The group of Mathijs de Weerdt (Algoritmics) has been subsidized by NWO to test 'future proof flexible charging' in Amsterdam with an app by Jedlix. Recently developed algorithms can plan when you should charge your electric vehicle (when there is enough wind and sun, low energy prices) and how far your battery should be charged (depending on your ride).

Tamara Kloek has been selected as EWI's best graduate of 2016 based on her thesis "The effect of dendritic spine morphology on synaptic crosstalk: Two multisynapse models, integrating diffusion on curved surfaces". She has graduated in the Applied Mathemetics department under supervision of dr. ir. F.J. Vermolen. The award ceremony is on November, 17.

If we are to tame fungi and optimize their extremely important role in our ecosystem, we must gain a more complete view of their functional abilities. Researchers from TU Delft and Utrecht University have exposed a previously hidden layer of functional complexity in fungi. They publish their findings on Friday September 23th in Nature Scientific Reports.
