Designing chatbot interactions to facilitate personal note-taking and retrieval in the age of ChatGPT

Taking notes to help you remember things and for later reference is commonplace everywhere, from the classroom to factories. After all, the human brain can only remember so much, and even the act of taking notes can be helpful. Digital notes are practical and can be stored in the cloud. However, the sheer volume of notes may be difficult to manage and use effectively after a while. This project aims to explore how ChatGPT-powered tools can help improve the user experience and effectiveness of digital note-taking. Large Language Models, like ChatGPT, provide powerful text-processing capabilities that could be used at various stages of note management, from supporting the process of note-taking, managing existing notes (e.g., removing outdated or conflicting notes) and information retrieval (e.g., using the notes to answer user questions). This project will involve user research, prototyping (aspects of) a ChatGPT-powered note management system, and user testing. It will build on existing prototypes that were developed as part of an EU project for companies across Europe.
