CLEAR: Design roadmapping for life-long health

News - 25 November 2020 - Communication

The strategic designers among us will doubtless be familiar with design roadmapping, a methodology for envisioning and strategising towards innovative futures. IDE SPD master students following the Design Roadmapping master course have been using this approach to imagine new service propositions for CLEAR: a start-up offering a personalised nutrition service that uses biodata, lifestyle information and precision AI to support users in their health journey. Led by course coordinator Lianne Simonse, the students explored life-long health services in relation to food and biodata. They developed strategic directions for CLEAR, resulting in future visions and roadmaps that are compelling and convincing in equal measure.

In the final presentations, the students showcased their visions through videos, built around narratives of innovation and the strategic decisions that informed their roadmap designs. These serve not only as a testimony to the students’ hard work, but as a valuable asset in communicating with project stakeholders - particularly CLEAR co-founder and Head of Bioscience, Dr. Madelon Bracke. Madelon said of the students’ work: “I was really impressed by the in-depth analyses, critical thinking and creativity that was presented in (their) representations of the company that I know so well.”

Some lucky students were also presented with awards for their outstanding work: students Elisa Bloem, Gaby Ghusen, Gianmarco Luggeri, Eva van Hulten and Marije Wentin received the CLEAR award, whilst Bertha Cadena, Nadiye Çakir, Harm Emmen and Joyce van Weverwijk were recognised by the course team for their excellent visualisations. They received the design roadmapping award. Even in this year’s extraordinary circumstances, the renewed educational activities of staff and students alike made the course a resounding success.

Around 115 students benefited from new learning experiences. During online meetups students took part in DIY exercises supported by Miro. They also watched – and even made - video lectures on the community workspace, Notion. Despite all these online learning innovations, what stood out for most students was meeting at the faculty. The joy of working with team members in person and presenting their future vision and roadmap to fellow students and experts, was plain to see in the course evaluation. Something to keep in mind for the educators among us challenged to provide blended teaching for future semesters and courses.
