Ransomware attacks are among the most severe cyber threats. The article "A Tale of Two Markets: Investigating the Ransomware Payments Economy" authored by recent TU Delft Cybersecurity Ph.D. graduate Kris Oosthoek, Professor of Cybersecurity Georgios Smaragdakis, and collaborator Jack Cable from US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) was featured in the Communications of the ACM (CACM) August 2023 issue. The work sheds light on the ransomware payments economy by analyzing over thirteen thousand ransom payments to 87 criminal actors over the last five years, worth more than $101 million. Their data-driven, follow-the-money approach to characterize the ransomware ecosystem uncovers two parallel ransomware criminal markets: commodity ransomware and Ransomware as a Service (RaaS).
