Willem van Driel

Prof. Willem Dirk van Driel is part-time Professor of Reliability of Micro and Nanoelectronics at the department of Microelectronics since September 2017. He will teach two electives: Microelectronics Reliability (ET4277) and Advanced Microelectronics Packaging (ET4391). In addition, he will set up a Centre of Excellence on Reliability of Micro and Nanoelectronics. A place where industry and the university can meet, share knowledge and join together to fulfil their ambitions for excellence in the field.

Teaching is one of my favourite hobbies. What could be more wonderful than passing on knowledge to keen young minds?

Willem: “Besides TU Delft, I work as a Programme Manager SSL Reliability for Philips Lighting. My expertise lies in inventing practical solutions relating to the lifespan of electronic products. I am very proud of all my 20 patents, particularly the last one: ‘Colour maintenance improvement by using Mie scattering in optical materials for LED-based products’. Together with my colleague we spent 18 months working on a method for predicting colour change in lighting. We described the interaction between the degradation of the light source, the degradation of the materials used and the product itself (the shape, for example). I'm still amazed and delighted that we pulled this off!”
